

the people don't want to tear down the old building. What they do is totally gut the inside of the building leaving the origional facade. Then build it all new on the inside. The buildings are all so close together that there is no room for big equipment to help with the tear down. We saw men coming out of the buildings with 5 gallon buckets of rubble and dump it in the bed of a small truck. Then they would go in for more. We were amazed to think that they were doing all of the work by hand. The architecture was really cool. If we could go back to only one place from our trip it would be Lisbon. The bridge is a sister to the Golden Gate bridge, and on the west bank of the river is a big statue of Christ that watches over Lisbon, similar to the one in Rio, Brazil. In the top picture you can see how they built the new right out of the old.
